Six members of the Aces participated in one of the biggest, fastest age group meets of the season in Etobicoke.
The 25th anniversary of the Youth Cup Championships took place from
Dec. 6 to 9 with over 850 participants and 48 clubs from across Canada
and from the Cayman Islands.
Brooke Davidson, 17, showed that hard work does pay off. Davidson
broke six club records. She also swam to a fifth place finish in the 50
fly in what had to be the most exciting race of the meet. All eight
swimmers in the final were in a straight line across the pool with only
five metres to go. The time difference from first to eighth was less
then half a second. Davidson also finished 14th in the 100 fly and
twelfth in the 50 back. Her times in the meet qualified her for age
group nationals in July in Calgary, East Nationals in Etobicoke in Feb
and Provincials in July in Thunder Bay.
Kris Sanders 14, swam to a provincial time in the 200br with a 14th
place finish. Sanders was also 14th in the 50 br. In preliminaries
Sanders tied for 16th place causing a swim off in the event. Sanders
won the swim off and his time in the swim missed Age group Nationals by
a tenth of a second. He did qualify for the meet in the 200 br.
Alex Buehlow swam to two more age group national times and
provincial times in the 800fr and 400 fr. He also finished 13th in the
800fr and 15th in the 200 fly.
Andrew Warr, 15, competed in the 15-17 age group and had a best
placing of 19th in the 50 fly. Warr had some great swims breaking the
club record in the 100 fly and took off over 12 seconds in five swims.
Blythe Mackie, 12, swam in her first national type meet. Her best
placing was 35th in both the 100 and 200 fly in a field of over 100
swimmers. Mackie had a best time in her 50 fr.
Rounding out the team of six was Sarah Sine. Sine, who is 17, has
just started making some of the bigger meets. She finished 59th in the
50 fr.
The next meet is the Ingersoll Christmas Invitational.
Several members of the Aces competed in the Nothers Awards
Invitational at the end of Nov. The team swam very well with many
swimmers stepping up to new levels. Davidson won a gold and silver
medal in the 50 fly, 50 bk respectively, setting a new club record in
the 50 bk. Erica Buehlow won a bronze medal in the 200 br, fifth in 400
IM and sixth in 100 br.
Jaime Doucet was seventh in the 50 br.
Elise Elliott finished with a best placing of fourteenth in 50 fr.
Ally Govier set a new club record in the 800fr finishing sixth in that
event while brother Derek Govier was eighth in the 800fr.
Lindsay Gutoskie had a best placing of thirteenth in both the 200 and 400 IM's.
Sam Hesch finished fourteenth in the 400 fr. Caleb Isaac was twelfth
in 100 fly. Jacob Isaac recorded 100 per cent best times and set two
new club records in 200bk and 400 fr. Mackie took off over 70 seconds
in five events.
Meghan Mackie took off over 54 seconds with a fifth place in the 200
fly. Dylan Riddell finished seventh in the 400 IM taking off 70 seconds
in that event alone.
